Unveiled at the 2019 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, the Audi AI:TRAIL quattro is a futuristic emissions-free car built for going off the beaten track.
The Audi AI:TRAIL quattro completes a set of four concept cars with electric drive systems, which began with the unveiling of the Audi Aicon in 2017. Designed without compromise, these visionary models aren’t just built for show – they are live test beds for Audi’s design and technology innovations going forward. Together, they confirm the brand with the four rings as a leader in progressive design and emissions-free motoring.
Staying sustainable while driving away from paved roads in remote locations has plenty of challenges. How can a battery-powered vehicle successfully navigate harsh, uneven terrain while maintaining a decent range? Well, the practical issues are solved by equipping the Audi AI:TRAIL quattro with four electric motors – one for each wheel – and quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Smart technology coordinates driving stability and traction, avoiding energy-consuming slip whenever possible. This vehicle is built to tackle extremes, with chunky 22-inch wheels and 34cm ground clearance, with a stiff yet lightweight body adding to off-road capability. Meanwhile its high-capacity lithium-ion battery targets a range of up to 500km on roads or easy off-road terrain, and an impressive 250km when covering much rougher ground.
As well as advanced engineering, Audi is also innovating the driving experience to deliver something truly special. The result is a new kind of quattro experience focused on bringing driver and passengers closer to nature when off the beaten track. Hence the huge, airy cabin which offers helicopter-style, 360-degree vision with glass extending all the way to ground. There’s no dashboard display, leaving the driver free to enjoy an uninterrupted view of the landscape through the wraparound windscreen, with all vehicle operations performed via personal smartphone.
Design inspiration for the Audi AI:TRAIL quattro appears to span everything from sci-fi tech to wilderness chic. Headlights are carried by drones – Audi Light Pathfinders – that fly off the roof into the night sky to illuminate the way ahead. Rear seats are designed like hammocks that can be removed to create stylish outdoor seating. Now you really can’t get any closer to nature than that!
