Gran Turismo of the future – the Audi e-tron GT
The eagerly anticipated new Audi e-tron GT is set to propel Audi’s all-electric range into serious high-performance territory. Due to enter production at the end of 2020, it’ll be the third and most powerful all-electric model yet launched by the brand with the four rings.
Still wearing a disguise before its official reveal, the e-tron GT’s muscular, low-slung body and gently sloping roofline are already beautifully apparent in these latest images. Audi has created a sporty gran turismo with awesome road presence and teamed it with the most progressive battery-driven technology.
This four-door fully-electric coupé will roll off the same joint assembly line in Germany as the iconic, conventionally powered Audi R8. The e-tron GT’s curvaceous body and expressive lines demand a supercar’s hand-crafted attention to detail, and this is supplemented by automated precision in the form of pioneering VR technology, 3D printing and a small army of robots. Interestingly, production of the e-tron GT was designed without physical prototypes – a first at Audi. “Here, we are bringing a unique combination of craftsmanship and smart factory technology to life,” explains Head of Production, Wolfgang Schanz.
Full specifications have yet to be released at the time of writing, but the Audi e-tron GT concept – see above – unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show at the end of 2018 provided some pretty mouth-watering clues. Highlights of the concept included an 800-volt recharging system capable of achieving an 80 per cent recharge in as little as 20 minutes, and power output of 590 hp taking the concept car from 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds.
The sleek coupé not only looks amazing, it also sounds extraordinary too. As standard, the Audi e-tron GT will create the legally required artificial exterior sounds, but alongside this system will be an optional Sound Package, which is composed from 32 distinct elements using custom software to give the car an utterly thrilling and unique sound profile.
