In the spirit of the event’s theme, “Epic Mode On”, two A1 Sportback models were actually hoisted up to the third level of JCube, where The Rink is located.
The icy floor of The Rink was carpeted so that guests could walk around and check out highlights such as the Audi-themed grand ice sculptures and a snack station serving Dragon's Beard Candy – complete with liquid nitrogen to create smoke that guests could blow out.
“Audi is always setting the bar higher, and this time, they’ve gone above and beyond. I mean, a car event on an ice skating rink? It’s revolutionary!” said Audi Ambassador and Mediacorp Class 95 Radio DJ Yasminne Cheng. Yasminne introduced the Audi A1 Sportback – one in Misano Red and the other in Python Yellow – a limited edition colour that’s exclusive to the new A1.
Audi Singapore’s managing director, Markus Schuster, believes that the Audi A1 Sportback is perfect for city driving. “The Audi A1 Sportback is the concentrated version of all the Audi values in a compact package. Dynamically designed, fun to drive and connected, it’s ideal for Singapore,” said Markus.
The Infotainment concept in the new A1 Sportback comes from the full-size class. The MMI radio comes as standard – it can be operated via the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel and the display in the fully digital instrument cluster.
Compared to the first-generation A1, the new A1 has grown significantly in length, while the width remains almost the same. The new-generation model also stands at 1.41 metres in height. The wide track and short overhangs provide for a taut, sporty look. The wide, low-placed Singleframe grille and the implied side air inlets dominate the distinctive front.
The new Audi A1 bears some resemblance to the Audi Ur-quattro and Sport quattro when viewed from the side. The wide, flat sloping C-pillar seems to push the car forward even while standing still, and the roof contrast line ends above the C-pillar. This gives the impression that the roof is flatter and the complete car is even lower-slung.
Also present at the event was MediaCorp Star Search 2019 Champion, Zhang Ze Tong, who posed for pictures with starry-eyed fans. Ze Tong got to take home an Audi Q2 for winning the Audi-sponsored Star Search competition.
With all this ‘epicness’ that went down, what did the guests think of the new Audi A1 Sportback? “The car looks so sporty and amazing,” said Shawn Quek, 29, who’s been driving an Audi for about six years now and currently owns an A3. “I love all the techy features that Audi models are equipped with, too. Everyone appreciates them because they make life that much easier.”
